The Bomann Museum in Celle, Germany Protects Exhibits from Theft and Vandalism and Lowers Security Costs with Avigilon

The Bomann Museum in Celle, Germany is one of the region’s most beautiful and culturally important museums. With an exhibition area of 6,500 square feet across several buildings, the Museum is the third largest in Lower Saxony and showcases the region’s folklore and history. With the goal to provide a safe, educational, and enjoyable museum experience, the Bomann Museum replaced its dated analog-based surveillance system with the Avigilon high- definition surveillance system to improve onsite security, protect exhibits from theft and vandalism, and reduce overall security costs.

“We looked at various options but chose the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system because of its ease-of-use, reliability, scalability, and advanced performance and management features.”

Protecting History with Advanced Technology

To showcase the region’s cultural history, the Bomann Museum delivers an interactive experience that includes a complete replica of a sixteenth century farmhouse, rooms from old cottages, and period costumes, along with the largest German collection of miniature portraits and the world’s first 24-hour modern art museum. With some sections of the museum currently under renovation, the Museum is constantly striving to create an impactful and memorable visitor experience. As part of its remodelling initiative, the Museum chose to replace its analog-based surveillance system, which had reached its performance threshold and could no longer scale to meet future needs. “We needed a more effective and reliable way to protect our most valuable exhibition pieces,” explained Frank-Ulrich Strauss, facility manager at the Bomann Museum, who added that the old analog system consisted of 40 black and white cameras that were difficult to use and delivered poor image quality. “With the old system, incidents were not always properly recorded, and even if they were, the quality was so poor that images were often unusable in investigations.”

Dissatisfied with the Museum’s existing surveillance system, the facility management team began to look for a new surveillance solution that would categorically meet its top requirements. “The new system had to be easy to use, capable of integrating with our existing analog system, and scalable,” explained Strauss.

After a successful week-long demonstration of the Avigilon high- definition surveillance system organized by Balter Security, a local provider of surveillance system design, installation, and service, the Museum decided to move forward with the Avigilon solution. “We looked at various options but chose the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system because of its ease-of-use, reliability, scalability, and advanced performance and management features.”

Avigilon in Action

Staff at the Bomann Museum seamlessly manages the Avigilon high- definition surveillance system using Avigilon Control Center network video management software (NVMS) with High-Definition Stream Management. The Museum installed Avigilon high-definition 1 MP and 2 MP cameras to monitor activity at its main entrances and installed several Avigilon Analog Video encoders to create a hybrid surveillance system that dramatically and cost-effectively improves the performance of its existing analog cameras. Storing up to 90 days of continuous surveillance video, the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system is monitored live during business hours by museum staff located in the main entrance and second-floor entrance.

“With Avigilon Control Center software, we’ve been able to expedite our investigations by 70 percent, saving time and leading to quicker and more successful incident resolution.”

Delivering Peace of Mind

“By leveraging the management features of Avigilon Control Center software, including its advanced zooming and search capabilities, we can capture a much better recorded image with improved detail and at the same time, ensure greater overall coverage across all our buildings,” stated Strauss. With the Avigilon high-definition surveillance solution in place, Museum staff knows that they have the right tools in hand to effectively retrieve and review high-quality images for more successful investigations. “Our security team is much more relaxed because we know that we have a state-of-the-art system in place that is reliable, easy to use, and highly effective.

Intuitive Software for Successful Investigations

Strauss and his team selected the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system in part for its ease-of-use and intuitive graphical user interface, which has made training staff quick and uncomplicated. “It took us no time to get up and running on the Avigilon system,” noted Strauss. “And by developing a precise and comprehensive deployment plan, Balter Security and SiTech Celle, a local systems integrator, helped us install and configure the system on time and on budget, with no surprises.” With its straightforward and powerful functionality, Avigilon Control Center software has enabled Museum users to dramatically reduce the time it takes to investigate an incident. “With Avigilon Control Center software, we’ve been able to expedite our investigations by 70 percent, saving time and leading to quicker and more successful incident resolution.” Avigilon’s ease-of-use and superior image quality have also meant that users spend less time managing the system, freeing their time for other important operational tasks.

“Since deploying the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system, maintenance requirements have been reduced to almost nothing.”

Reducing Total Cost of Ownership

According to Strauss, another key selling feature of the Avigilon high- definition surveillance system is the fact that it easily integrates with the Museum’s existing analog-based cameras, thereby leveraging its current infrastructure investment. “The Avigilon solution allows us to leverage our fixed assets while improving overall system performance and provides the flexibility to transition to high-definition as time and budget permits,” said Strauss. Strauss says that the Museum has achieved further cost savings because the Avigilon system requires far less maintenance than its previous system. “Since deploying the Avigilon high-definition surveillance system, maintenance requirements have been reduced to almost nothing.”

“The Avigilon high- definition surveillance system delivers top notch yet affordable image quality.”

The Avigilon Commitment

The Bomann Museum continues to invest in the latest technologies to help create a contemporary backdrop on which to showcase the region’s rich history. Driven to provide a safe and educational museum experience, the Museum plans to expand the Avigilon high- definition surveillance system across all exhibition areas to further enhance onsite safety and protect valuable artifacts. “The Avigilon high-definition surveillance system delivers top notch yet affordable image quality,” concluded Strauss. “And by partnering with local surveillance system experts who speak our language and understand our needs, Avigilon has demonstrated its commitment to the German market, a key consideration for us.”
